AP French Language and Culture is a one-year course at roughly B2 / lower-C1 level. The exam structure matches AP Spanish: from May 2027 a digital free-response section (project presentation, project Q&A, argumentative essay) and a multiple-choice section (listening and reading), each 50% of the score, organised around six cultural themes. We coach all four skills against the College Board scoring guidelines with French-specific cultural content.

AP French tests whether students can interpret authentic French-language audio and text from across the Francophone world, write a structured argumentative essay in French, present a project prepared before exam day, and answer recorded follow-up questions on it.
Strong candidates know not just France but also the wider Francophone world (Québec, West Africa, the Maghreb, Belgium, Switzerland), and bring that range into the project and the essay.

Do I need to know Francophone Africa and Canada?
Yes. The exam draws on authentic material from across the Francophone world, not just metropolitan France, and a wider reference bank strengthens both the project and the essay.
Can a bilingual or near-native speaker score a 5?
Usually yes, but only after practising the AP-specific tasks. Native fluency does not automatically translate to a structured argumentative essay or a 3-minute project presentation with recorded follow-up questions.
