AP Cybersecurity at a glance

AP Cybersecurity is the AP course College Board introduced for the 2026-27 school year, and it maps onto a first-year university cybersecurity course. It has no prerequisite. The course follows a defence-in-depth argument across five units: Introduction to Security, Securing Physical Spaces, Securing Networks, Securing Devices, and Securing Applications and Data. One detail matters more than any other when planning study: College Board publishes the multiple-choice weighting by skill rather than by unit, across Analyse Risk, Mitigate Risk and Detect Attacks. The exam is fully digital and has no scored project component; the whole score comes from 60 multiple-choice questions and one free-response question.

What this AP tests

What AP Cybersecurity actually tests

AP Cybersecurity is not a programming exam. It asks whether a student can read a device's security policies, firewall configuration, file-system permissions and log entries, and then say what is wrong, what evidence supports it, and which control would reduce the risk. Roughly 70% of the score comes from multiple-choice questions, some standalone and some built on a shared stimulus.

Because the weighting is published by skill rather than by unit, the sensible study plan is not unit-by-unit coverage but three skills applied across the whole course. Students who memorise unit lists and their order tend to lose marks on questions that ask them to recognise the same attack pattern in a different layer of the stack.

Where students lose marks

Common ways students drop points

  • Planning study around a unit-by-unit percentage breakdown that College Board does not publish for this exam.
  • Jumping to a recommended control in the free-response question before identifying the evidence in the logs.
  • Describing a mitigation as a fix, when the rubric asks how far it reduces the risk and at which layer.
  • Confusing the configuration (the rules) with the log (the event) and reasoning from the wrong one.
How tutoring helps

How TestPrep tuition closes AP Cybersecurity gaps

  • A threat-and-control framework carried across all five units, so the same attack pattern is practised in every layer.

  • Weekly log-reading practice, because the free-response question is a reading task rather than a recall task.

  • Drill on the three skill categories in the weighting College Board actually publishes.

  • Written practice for the free-response answer: evidence first, then the vulnerability, then the control.

  • Timed digital mock exams with the answer conditions Bluebook imposes.

AP vs A Level vs IB

How AP Cybersecurity compares to A Level and IB

AP Cybersecurity has no direct A Level or IB equivalent. The nearest cousins are the security units inside A Level Computer Science and the computer-science options in IB Diploma Programme, but the AP course treats attacks and defences as its own subject rather than as an application topic. UK students with a computer-science background usually move quickly through the network and device units and need more help with the risk-analysis vocabulary; students from a non-technical background often find the technical configuration work demanding and do better when they start with the physical-security unit.

Who this course suits

Is AP Cybersecurity the right AP for you?

Best fit

Year 12 students applying for computer science, software engineering or information systems, and students who want the defensive half of computing to appear on their transcript.

Sprint mode

Students with a computing background who need the exam format, the skill-based weighting and the free-response technique drilled.

Approach with care

Students who expect to write code. There is no programming on this exam, and students who want that should look at AP Computer Science A instead.

For parents: This course reads like a non-technical subject but is not one: the free-response question asks students to read configuration and log output carefully. Families should expect a term of steady reading practice rather than a term of coding.

Quick Answers

AP Cybersecurity tuition — short answers to common questions

Direct answers to the questions students and parents ask most often.

How much does AP Cybersecurity tuition cost?

AP Cybersecurity 1-to-1 tuition starts from €63 per lesson, with the per-lesson rate dropping in the 10- and 20-lesson packages. AP Cybersecurity is taught 1-to-1 only this academic year. See /pricing for current packages and instalment options.

Do I need AP Computer Science A first?

No. The course has no prerequisite. AP Computer Science A is programming (Java); AP Cybersecurity is defence, risk analysis and incident detection. They are not prerequisites of one another, and taken together they make a strong computer-science profile.

Is there a project or performance task?

No. AP Cybersecurity has no scored project component. The whole score comes from 60 multiple-choice questions and one free-response question on exam day.

Why are there no unit weightings?

College Board does not publish a unit-by-unit percentage for this exam. The weighting is given through three skill categories — Analyse Risk, Mitigate Risk and Detect Attacks — each taking a quarter to two-fifths of the multiple-choice section. Unit percentages you see elsewhere are not official.

Who is AP Cybersecurity tuition for?

AP Cybersecurity tuition suits sixth-form and high-school students sitting AP exams worldwide. Whether you are doing A Levels, IB, an American diploma or a national curriculum, our online format works across international time zones.

Is there a group course for AP Cybersecurity?

No. AP Cybersecurity is taught 1-to-1 only in the 2026–2027 academic year; there is no group course for this subject. Pace, days and times are set around the individual student. Group courses continue to run in other AP subjects.

How many units are in the AP Cybersecurity exam?

The AP Cybersecurity exam follows the College Board CED and is built around 5 core units. Our lessons cover every unit from first principles to exam level, then consolidate with MCQ and FRQ mock papers.

AP Cybersecurity lessons built around your weak spots

Catch-up, score lift and exam-window revision — built around AP-style MCQ and FRQ practice.

I am behind — can I catch up?

Yes. We map the AP Cybersecurity units that matter most for your target score and exam date, then prioritise topic repair over re-teaching everything.

I want a 4 or 5 — how do lessons help?

Lessons focus on AP-style MCQs and FRQs taken from past papers, with rubric-aligned feedback on every written answer.

Will I get feedback on real AP-style work?

Yes. Weekly homework includes timed AP-style sets that your tutor marks against the College Board rubric, with written notes on partial credit.

Can I focus only on my weak units?

Yes. Short revision plans of 10–20 lessons are common, especially in the months before May. We rebuild the plan as the diagnostic reveals new gaps.
