AP Calculus AB key statistics

AP Calculus AB at a glance

AP Calculus AB is a single-variable calculus course covering limits, derivatives, integrals, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, roughly equivalent to a first university semester. The exam mixes multiple-choice and free-response with calculator and non-calculator sections. We prepare students with CED-aligned weekly lessons, FRQ rubric drills, and timed past-paper practice so that the May exam feels familiar rather than new.

What this AP tests

What AP Calculus AB actually tests

AP Calculus AB tests whether students can compute and reason with limits, derivatives, and definite integrals — and just as importantly, whether they can justify their answers using calculus language. The free-response section weights set-up, notation, and reasoning at least as heavily as the final numerical answer.

Strong candidates can move fluently between graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations of the same idea, and can interpret derivatives and integrals in applied contexts such as motion, rates, and accumulation.

Where students lose marks

Common ways students drop points

  • Setting up an FRQ correctly but losing rubric points by writing answers without units, justification, or correct calculus notation.
  • Mixing calculator and non-calculator strategies on the wrong part of the paper.
  • Stating that a function is increasing/decreasing or has an extremum without referencing the sign of the derivative.
  • Applying the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus without clearly identifying the antiderivative.
  • Differential equations problems where the initial condition is forgotten or the constant of integration is dropped.
How tutoring helps

How TestPrep tuition closes AP Calculus AB gaps

  • Diagnostic on derivative and integral fluency to find whether the issue is algebra, notation, or conceptual.

  • Targeted topic repair on the units the diagnostic flags (commonly Unit 6 integration and Unit 8 applications).

  • Weekly past-paper FRQs marked against the College Board rubric, focusing on justification language.

  • Calculator-active vs calculator-banned drilling so the student stops flipping strategy mid-question.

  • Spring revision plan that mixes full timed papers with targeted weak-topic boosters.

AP vs A Level vs IB

How AP Calculus AB compares to A Level and IB

AP Calculus AB overlaps substantially with the calculus components of A Level Mathematics (Pure 1–2) and IB Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches SL. The main differences are the FRQ justification style — AP awards explicit marks for calculus reasoning written in words — and the integration of graphical/numerical/analytical representations. UK and EU students often take AP Calculus AB alongside their main qualification as a second academic signal for US universities, especially for STEM applications.

Who this course suits

Is AP Calculus AB the right AP for you?

Best fit

Year 12/13 students taking A Level Maths or IB Maths AA who want to add a US-recognised calculus credential.

Sprint mode

Students within 8–12 weeks of the exam who can compute derivatives and integrals but lose marks on FRQ wording.

Approach with care

Students still consolidating algebra and trigonometry — these gaps surface fast in derivative practice.

For parents: We share a weekly progress note covering topics taught, FRQ scores against the AP rubric, and the planned focus for the next session, so parents always know what is next.

Quick Answers

AP Calculus AB tuition — short answers to common questions

Direct answers to the questions students and parents ask most often.

How much does AP Calculus AB tuition cost?

AP Calculus AB 1-to-1 tuition starts from $65 per lesson, with the per-lesson rate dropping in the 10- and 20-lesson packages. The small group course covers the full academic year (8 months / 50 lessons + 10 mock exams) for $1755, roughly 40% cheaper than private tuition. See /pricing for current packages and instalment options.

Should I take AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC?

AB is roughly one university semester of calculus; BC adds series, parametric/polar functions, and more integration techniques. If you are aiming at STEM courses at competitive US universities, BC carries more weight. If you have done less calculus at school, AB is the safer path.

Do I need a graphing calculator for AP Calculus AB?

Yes — the exam has calculator-active sections and the College Board publishes an approved calculator list. We teach with the TI-84 Plus / Casio fx-CG family because they appear most often in our students' schools.

How much does AP Calculus AB overlap with A Level Maths?

Roughly 60–70% of the AB content overlaps with A Level Pure Maths calculus. The main gaps are the FRQ justification style, the calculator-active section, and AP-specific notation for accumulation and motion problems — all coachable within a focused programme.

Who is AP Calculus AB tuition for?

AP Calculus AB tuition suits sixth-form and high-school students sitting AP exams worldwide. Whether you are doing A Levels, IB, an American diploma or a national curriculum, our online format works across international time zones.

What is the difference between 1-to-1 tutoring and the small group course?

1-to-1 tutoring is fully bespoke and runs at your pace. The small group course caps at six students, runs to a fixed weekly schedule across an academic year, and covers the full AP Calculus AB CED at a lower cost than private tutoring.

How many units are in the AP Calculus AB exam?

The AP Calculus AB exam follows the College Board CED and is built around 8 core units. Our lessons cover every unit from first principles to exam level, then consolidate with MCQ and FRQ mock papers.

When does the AP Calculus AB group course start?

The AP Calculus AB small group course starts on 29 Eylül 2026 Salı and runs until 20 Nisan 2027 Salı, with 50 sessions in total (40 lessons + 10 review/mock sessions) on a fixed weekly schedule.

For students

AP Calculus AB lessons built around your weak spots

Catch-up, score lift and exam-window revision — built around AP-style MCQ and FRQ practice.

I am behind — can I catch up?

Yes. We map the AP Calculus AB units that matter most for your target score and exam date, then prioritise topic repair over re-teaching everything.

I want a 4 or 5 — how do lessons help?

Lessons focus on AP-style MCQs and FRQs taken from past papers, with rubric-aligned feedback on every written answer.

Will I get feedback on real AP-style work?

Yes. Weekly homework includes timed AP-style sets that your tutor marks against the College Board rubric, with written notes on partial credit.

Can I focus only on my weak units?

Yes. Short revision plans of 10–20 lessons are common, especially in the months before May. We rebuild the plan as the diagnostic reveals new gaps.
